Cell Phone Unlocking to [Probably] Become Legal Again

Cell phone unlocking

In 2012, unlocking a cell phone was decided to be copyright law violation. Of course, this upset a large portion of the tech community, as people who spend the money to get a phone would be stuck with the carrier they originally went with. The bill passed the senate, and about two week after, the House of Representatives passed the bill. Now all that needs to be done is for the two parts of Congress to get together, revise the two ideas into one final bill. Then, it’s off to the White House to see President Barack Obama, who has pledged to sign the bill into law!

Up until 2012, cell phone unlocking was legal, but the Library of Congress decided it was unlawful, so it’s surprising that just a couple years later, it’s being turned around again. Let’s hope it stays that way for a while.

Make iPhone Apps fit the iPhone 5 and iPod Touch 4″ display with FullForce

A while back Ryan Petrich released tweak for the iPad which stretched iPhone apps to fit the screen without using the “2x” function. Petrich has now released a new tweak that forces apps without support for 4 inch devices to fit the screen. The tweak doesn’t work with all apps but it should do the trick for most. The tweak, FullForce, is available for purchase from Cydia for $0.99.

iOS 6.1 Jailbreak Might Be Released this Sunday, Will support all 22 Device Variations

Planetbeing has confirmed on Twitter that their untethered jailbreak works with the new iOS 6.1 firmware released by Apple today.

Right before Planetbeing confirmed, MuscleNerd tweeted the following

the tweet is somewhat of a hint that the team might release the jailbreak on Superbowl Sunday. Following the tweet he replied to a user saying that the jailbreak will support all twenty-two device variations.

@unicornhacker yes, every other 6.1 device variation will be supported. All TWENTY-TWO of them (omg!). Plus atv2 if it’s out in time.

If you are planning on Jailbreaking your device then it is recommended that you don’t do an OTA upgrade and instead make a full restore using iTunes because, as MuscleNerd tweeted, , “OTA is more time consuming for us to test, and it gives you different SHSH blobs than normal restore.” Stay tuned for a tutorial on how to Jailbreak your device later this week.

Jailbroken iPhone 5 running iOS 6?

Earlier today a popular jailbreak developer, chpwn, tweeted out a screenshot of an iPhone 5 running iOS 6 with Cydia installed.

At the moment there is no further information on whether or not the jailbreak will be released publicly any time soon. If there are any updates, you can stay up to date with the latest jalbreak news here.

Jailbreak iPhone 4S 5.0.1 [Video] (Mac)

These are instructions on how to perform an untethered jailbreak of your iPhone 4S using Absinthe for Mac.

*Warning* Before you continue make sure to do a backup of your device in iTunes as you may lose your Camera Roll during this process. (This is very unlikely though) Make sure to watch the whole video before doing anything first.

iOS 7 Jailbreak Coming Soon?

Recently, Ryan Petrich tweeted out a screenshot of what appears to be Activator on an iPod Touch running iOS 7.

iOS 7 Jailbreak?

iOS 7 Jailbreak?

In the picture there is a UIAlert window that states that the system version is too new and that “Activator has not been tested to work with this version of iOS. Some features may not work as designed.” Another hacker, p0sixninja, tweeted that we should think bigger than a jailbreak which suggests that he could have found a bootrom exploit. Stay tuned for any major developments.

Should you Jailbreak your iPhone 5, iPod Touch, or iPad with Evasi0n? Apple Says No.

Apple has posted a document warning users of problems that could arise if they decide to “Jailbreak” their device. This seems to be like more of a scare tactic from Apple to those who haven’t jailbroken their devices in the past. From hands-on experience, I can tell you that problems do arise from time to time especially if you don’t know the difference from what you can install and shouldn’t install. If you would like to jailbreak your device running iOS 6-iOS 6.1 and not listen to Apple then head over to the Evasi0n website, download the program, follow the instructions, and in very little time your device will be jailbroken.

As designed by Apple, iOS and iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch are designed to work together reliably. Unauthorized modifications to iOS (“jailbreaking”) can cause numerous issues to the hacked iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Examples of issues caused by these unauthorized modifications to iOS have included the following:

Instability: Frequent and unexpected crashes of the device, crashes and freezes of built-in apps and third-party apps, and loss of data.
Security vulnerabilities: Security compromises have been introduced by these modifications that could allow hackers to steal personal information, damage the device, attack the wireless network, or introduce malware or viruses.
Shortened battery life: The hacked software has caused an accelerated battery drain that shortens the operation of an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch on a single battery charge.
Unreliable voice and data: Dropped calls, slow or unreliable data connections, and delayed or inaccurate location data.
Disruption of services: Services such as Visual Voicemail, Weather, and Stocks have been disrupted or no longer work on the device. Additionally, third-party apps that use the Apple Push Notification Service have had difficulty receiving notifications or received notifications that were intended for a different hacked device. Other push-based services such as iCloud and Exchange have experienced problems synchronizing data with their respective servers.
Inability to apply future software updates: Some unauthorized modifications have caused damage to iOS that is not repairable. This can result in the hacked iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iOS update is installed.
Apple strongly cautions against installing any software that hacks iOS. It is also important to note that unauthorized modification of iOS is a violation of iOS end-user license agreement and because of this, Apple may deny service for an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software.

Re-Designed iOS App Switcher, Auxo, Now Available in Cydia

Auxo, an iOS tweak which features a fully re-designed app switching experience, has finally been released in the Cydia Store for $1.99. The tweak features snippets of the actual app that is running instead of just the icon and also has quick setting buttons for things like wifi and bluetooth.

At the moment the tweak only works on iPhone’s with iOS 6, but iOS 5 compatibility should be coming next week. Check out the video below to see what else the tweak has to offer.

Unfold Tweak Lets You Fold To Unlock Your iOS Device

Just last week there was news about a “Fold To Unlock” concept which was drafted by a designer on Dribble. Well, developers have now turned this concept into a fully functional tweak for jailbroken iPhones and it is now available for download via Cydia. The tweak is called Unfold and is available at the BigBoss repository which should be part of your Cydia sources by default. What is even better about this tweak is that it is free. Once it’s installed and activated, it transforms your  “slide to unlock” animation to something that looks like you’re folding away your ‘lock screen’.

Many users have reported some bugs especially when having IntelliScreen X, AndroidLock, Dashboard X, and some other tweaks installed on their device. I for one have not experienced any problems but if you do decide to install this then be aware that you are doing it at your own risk. Check out the video above to see how Unfold works.
